Leos Carax's musical film "Anette" is set to open the 74th Cannes Film Festival which will be held on July 6. The film is directed by Leos Carax and stars Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver and is Carax's first English film. The film will also play in a competition in Cannes nine years after the premiere of his French film Holy Motors.

"Annette" will also be simultaneously released in theatres by UGC in France. The film has a soundtrack composed by the 1971 art-rock band Sparks, founded by Ron and Russell Mael.

The film, which is set in Los Angeles is represented in the international market by Kinology, while Amazon Studios has its rights in the U.S. and Canadian.

The musical drama is being produced by Paul-Dominique Vacharasinthu and Charles Gillibert in association with Canal Plus, Arte and Amazon Studios.

Carax has directed many cult movies in his career, some of which are Holy Motors and Pola X and both of these films have competed in the festival. Carax's 1090 film "Les Amants du Pont Neuf" was completed in 1991 due to difficult financing and was played in the 1991 Cannes film festival in an out of competition slot.

Pierre Lescure, the president of the Cannes Film Festival has said that every Leos Carax film is an event that delivers on its promises. About Carax's latest project Annette, he said that it is a gift for the lovers of cinema, culture and music. It is something that they have been hoping for and yearning for about a year.

Cannes' chief, Thierry Frémaux said that they couldn't have dreamt of a better and more beautiful reunion with silver screen and cinema in the Palais des Festivals. He also added, "Carax’s cinema is an expression of these powerful gestures, these mysterious alchemies that makes the secret of cinema’s modernity and eternity."

The Cannes Film Festival is usually held in the mid-May slot but will run from July 6 to 17 this year.
