BTS Bayern3 Row: Halsey took to Instagram to call out German DJ Matthias Matuschik who called the K-pop boy band BTS "crappy virus".
Matuschik has been facing backlash for insulting K-pop band BTS since earlier this week when he played "Fix You" a cover song of the original one by BTS and called it "blasphemy". He also said that the band is "some crappy virus that hopefully there will be a vaccine for soon as well" (his German quote was translated to English by Associated Press).
Making things worse for himself, Matuschik later added that he couldn't be xenophobic because he "had a car from South Korea". He then apologised and said that his intention was not to "racially insult" BTS.
Talking about the incident, Halsey posted a story on her Instagram that read," I am horrified to read the comments made by Matthias Matuschik. Racism and xenophobia cannot be thinly veiled as ‘on-air humour’. "
She added that "irresponsible and disgusting statement" from the DJ has come at a time when "hate speech and violent behaviour towards the Asian community is skyrocketing". She added that statement was unacceptable and that a "better apology" to BTS and the Asian community across the world should be on its way.
Halsey later tweeted about the same and wrote," No one should have to endure this and together we must stand up and stop it.”
Others have also come in support of BTS. Musician Max Schneider wrote, "BTS is one of the hardest working and most humble groups in the industry. They deserve all the success they’ve earned."
The radio station Bayern3 released its apology in which they said that Matuschik's comment was his "opinion" presented in "an ironic, exaggerated way and the exaggerated excitement, his words went too far and hurt the feelings of BTS fans."
They added, “He just wanted to express his displeasure over the aforementioned cover version.”
