Deepika Padukone in Piku
Piku Banerjee, played by Deepika Padukone in the 2015 comedy drama, is another illustration of a strong woman who is completely capable of handling herself. The working generation of today, with its many responsibilities and frustrations, can relate very well to Piku, on the other hand. The addition of her irritable elderly father aggravates the exhausted single woman who sees developing a romantic attachment to someone as an additional responsibility. Here, Piku demonstrates how sometimes a friend—like Jisshu Sengupta's Syed or Irrfan Khan's Rana—is more important than a lover or a partner.
Vidya Balan in Shankuntala Devi
In the same-named film, Vidya Balan plays math genius Shakuntala Devi, who travels the world alone without a companion to keep pace with her. Anu, her daughter, is a sufficient companion for her. Devi's divorce status and the fact that she has superhuman math skills are irrelevant to her on the international stage. She breaks record after record without ever letting the stigma of divorce get in the way.
