Over the years, DC has introduced strong female champions who continue to make a mark across pop culture with their heroism, wit, and ingenuity. As we inch closer to the much-anticipated 85 years of Batman on September 21, here’s a look at the five leading ladies of Batman’s world:

Meet the Fabulous Women of the Batman Universe

Batgirl, aka Barbara Gordon

Batgirl, who first appeared in Detective Comics #233 (1956), is the real deal when it comes to being a rebel (sneaking behind her father, the Police Commissioner of Gotham’s back), and fighting for justice.

Accompanying Batman on his crime-fighting escapades, Batgirl became a household name with her fierce survivor attitude. Across adaptations, she remains a source of information for the Dark Knight of Gotham and inspiration for many, thanks to her persistence and will. This genius hacker and a founding member of Birds of Prey is one of the first—the young woman who turned the Dynamic Duo into the Batman family.

Batwoman, aka Kate Kane

Batwoman made her first appearance in DETECTIVE COMICS #233 in 1956. An exceptional martial artist with super combat strategy, Kate Kane’s brilliant deductive skills and intelligence made her a perfect team member to lead the Gotham Knights with Batman. Like her cousin Bruce, Batwoman faced family tragedies and became a crime-fighting crusader after seeing Batman and realising that her calling lies in crime fighting.

Catwoman, aka Selina Kyle

The master thief and anti-heroine, Catwoman, is the most famous love interest of and, in recent years, an ally of Bruce Wayne and Batman. Despite their separation in the comics, Selina Kyle and the Dark Knight have a unique but iconic relationship that strengthened and eventually led to their engagement in DC Rebirth. Selina, first seen in Batman #1 (1940), remains one of the most important women in Bruce's life, bringing the essence of happiness into his life and encouraging him to plan for a brighter future and a desire to be a better person.

Harley Quinn, aka formerly Dr. Harleen Quinzel

Fun fact! Initially, Harley Quinn was intended to appear in only one episode of ‘Batman: The Animated Series’. It all started with Arleen Sorkin's iconic influence on the character in Batman: The Animated Series, when Harley made her very first appearance 32 years ago. Thanks to her peculiar traits and non-conforming demeanour, Harley Quinn rose to become the people’s favourite! -- and the streets of Gotham City have never been the same.

With time, this expert combatant evolved to become a lead character in several comics and movies, and now in the upcoming movie Joker: Folie à Deux. Her superpowers make her immune to different forms of chemicals, but her ability to stand tall in the face of challenges makes her simply glorious and hard to forget as a nemesis for Batman.

Poison Ivy

First seen in Batman #181 (1966) and created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Carmine Infantino, Poison Ivy needs no introduction. She is a botanist and ecologist who can control plants. She can kill with just a kiss! Poison Ivy has also often shown sympathy towards women who have been victimized. Throughout the Batman legacy, she often shows up as an antagonist to Batman and has become one of the superhero Batman's most enduring enemies.
