Vicky Kaushal and Banita Sandhu starrer, Sardar Udham, released its teaser on September 27. The film is a biopic on freedom fighter named Sardar Udham Singh who assassinated former Governor of Punjab in British India of 1940,Michael O’Dwyer. Singh had tried to avenge the 1919 massacre at Jallianwala Bagh.
The film is set to release on October 16 on Amazon Prime, the announcement of it was made on Thursday this week. The film has been directed by Shoojit Sarkar. It has been bank rolled by Rising Sun Films along with Kino Works. The makers have described the film as a "heart wrenching story of retribution".
The will showcase the journey of the freedom fighter who reminded the world of the brutal massacre in Punjab at the hands of British soldiers. The lead actor, Vicky Kaushal who is going to play Sardar Udham Singh in the film unveiled the teaser on his social media handle.
Vijay Subramaniam, the director and content head of Amazon Prime told media, "Continuing a great partnership with Rising Sun Films, we are proud to present Sardar Udham, a stirring story of courage, fortitude and fearlessness, from the buried treasures of our history and culture."
“We are certain that our viewers across the spectrum will be inspired by this film that honours the life of one of the greatest martyrs in Indian history, whose profound and heart wrenching sacrifice avenged the death of many innocents,” Subramaniam added.
The producer of the film, Ronnie Lahiri said that the biopic will show and acknowledge the freedom fighter's "patriotism and deep-rooted, selfless love for his motherland." He added that the film is the product of two decades worth of research and the makers' understanding to present the untold story.
Earlier, Banita Sandhu had confirmed her presence in the film when she told the media, "“Yes I am in Sardar Udham Singh. We shot for it in Punjab. Vicky Kaushal is amazing and it was great to be back working with the October team again.” The film also stars Amol Parashar in a pivotal role.
