Bafta Nominations 2021: Four Women Nominated In Best Director Category

BAFTA nominations 2021: The nominations list for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards 2021 released on Tuesday and unlike last year, more women and Black artists made it to the list.

Following the Golden Globes nominations of 2021, BAFTA also showed promise for more female representation as four women were nominated in the best director category. Shannon Murphy has been nominated for her film Babyteeth, Jasmila Žbanić for Quo Vadis, Aida?, Sarah Gavron for film Rocks and Chloe Zhao who recently won the best director award for Nomadland at Golden Globes was also nominated for BAFTA. Emerald Fennell's Promising Young Woman had won many nominations at the Golden Globes but was only nominated for Best Original Screenplay for BAFTA.

In the lead female actors' category, Venessa Kirby was nominated for Pieces of a Woman, Frances McDormand for Nomadland, Radha Black for The Forty-Year-Old Version, Bukky Bakray for Rocks, Alfre Woodard for Clemency and Wunmi Mosaku for His House.

Overall, Nomadland lead the nominations list by winning nominations in several categories, best film, adapted screenplay, cinematography, editing and sound. This year, according to reports BAFTA appointed 500 more people to its already existing 6,500 members group. This was done to have more "unrepresented groups" part of the committee so that diverse works of art are recognised.

The BAFTA awards will be given out in two separate ceremonies which will be held on April 11 and April 10. The first day will be dedicated to "crafts" which will include editing, sound, costume and other categories while the second day will be for main categories such as actor, director, films and such. Both the ceremonies will be live-streamed from the Royal Albert Hall. Not much information has been given about the ceremony and how it will be conducted but it is speculated that Graham Norton will be the host.
