American actor Anne Hathaway, renowned for her roles both in front of and behind the camera, anticipates the release of her forthcoming film "The Idea of You" this May. Reflecting on her journey, she highlights the evolution of her role in advocating for herself within film projects. However, she recalls a stark contrast from the early days of her career, where auditions often involved uncomfortable scenarios.
In the past, the industry employed a practice known as a 'chemistry test,' where auditioning actors were tasked with performing intimate scenes to gauge their on-screen compatibility. which Hathaway described as "one of the worst days to do it".
Anne Hathaway Recalls "Making Out With 10 Guys" For An Audition
While this practice of "chemistry tests" during auditions has now stopped (hopefully), Hathaway during a fun interview with a friend for V Magazine recalled a "gross" audition where she was asked to make out with 10 different guys to "test for chemistry."
Discussing her upcoming role in The Idea of You, where the 41-year-old actor is playing a single mother caught in an unexpected romance in this rom-com, Hathaway also opened up about the bygone practice of "chemistry reads" in auditions as she shared: "Back in the 2000s, and this did happen to me," she added. "It was considered normal to ask actors to make out with other actors to test for chemistry, which is actually the worst way to do it."
The Princess Diary star further shared how she felt odd about it as she said, "We have ten guys coming today, and you're cast. Aren't you excited to make out with all of them?" where she found herself at an odd spot, questioning herself, " 'Is there something wrong with me?' because I wasn't excited. I thought it sounded gross."
Hathaway shared how she still did it and how young actors during those times felt pressured to conform, as she recalled being "very young and terribly aware of how easy it was to lose everything by being labelled difficult," She then added how she just pretended that she was "excited" and went on with it.
Oscar-winning actor, however, clarified that it was not a power play and no one was awful with her or tried to hurt her. Hathaway, however, concluded, as she stated, "It was just a very different time, and now we know better."
