Indian playback singer Alka Yagnik has an illustrious career spanning for four decades. The two-time National Film Award winner began her singing career at the young age of six, with All India Radio. The 55-year-old artist is well-liked for her duet songs with her co-artists Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu, both legendary singers of Hindi film industry. Numerous songs sung by Yagnik featured in BBC's Top 40 Bollywood Soundtracks of all time review.

Among her recent achievements, Alka Yagnik claimed first place in YouTube's Music Charts & Insights list of top global artists this year. Her most recent song is from the 2021 Pankaj Tripathi starrer Kaagaz which brought back Yagnik and Narayan together after many years.

 On her birthday today, we present a list of five songs that will make every 90s kid nostalgic.

Ek Do Teen

The song that can be considered perhaps the singer's breakout song is the iconic Ek Do Teen from the 1988 film Tezaab. The song, filmed on Madhuri Dixit, not only made the actor a household name, but also consolidated Yagnik's place as the voice of female leads in most 90s films.

Baahon Ke Darmiya

The 1996 release romantic drama, Khamoshi-The Musical, featuring the song Baahon Ke Darmiya sung by Alka Yagnik and singer Hariharan. We saw actors Salman Khan and Manisha Koirala setting a new level of chemistry on-screen in the romantic track. The directorial debut of well-known filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is remembered even today for its soundtrack.

 

Baazigar o Baazigar

The title track of the film Baazigar featured the iconic pair of Bollywood- Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. The action thriller inspired by the movie A Kiss Before Dying, had Shah Rukh Khan playing the antagonist. As fresh as the film is in our minds, so is the duet song by Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu.

Gazab Ka Hai Din

This modern take on the classic tragic romance stories, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, was released in 1988, easily Yagnik's breakout year. The romantic musical reinvented the genre in Hindi films and its tracklist became one of the best-selling Bollywood soundtrack albums of the time. Yagnik became the voice for its lead Juhi Chawla, singing three duets and one solo song for her. Here's her solo number from the film:

Ghoongat Ki Aad Se:

Alka Yagnik won her first National Award as a playback singer in 1993 for the song Ghhonghat Ki Aad Se from the film Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke. The song was picturised on the film's lead couple Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan.
