Rumours, riots and manipulation are not new to the world. People often blindly believe things that are popularised despite them being absolutely wrong. Bhushan Kumar and Anubhav Mishra's production Afwaah shows how power controls the public and how rumours can make it difficult to differentiate between truth and false.
Directed by Sudhir Mishra, Afwaah is set in a political background where we see Sumeet Vyas in the role of a young politician of Benaras Vicky Banna who provokes the public in order to create unrest and riot in the name of politics. He has a big base of followers who believe everything he says without thinking twice.
His fiance Nivedita, played by Bhumi Pednekar, is worried about the condition of Benaras if it is led by a leader like her fiance, more worried about what he might do once he becomes the deputy leader of her party.
Another pivotal role is of Rahab Ahmed, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who represents the rational thinking portion of the public as an advertising professional who gets involved in a deadly rumour with Nivedita.
The movie follows the cat-and-mouse chase between Vicky Banna and his goons and Nivedita and Rahab who are on a run to escape death by their hands. The film was released on May 5 and got positive reviews from the audience.
