Basking in the success of The Kerala Story, Adah Sharma opened up with SheThePeople about making a mark in entertainment, reflecting upon her journey of coming from an orthodox south Indian family to finding her ground in cinema, and how she only plans to work harder and scale new heights.
Adah Sharma on her journey
"I debuted 100 years ago in the horror film ‘1920’, and here we are 100 years later in 2023. Sometimes the most unlikely things happen to re-align your life and that happened to me with. It was during high school I discovered my love for acting and I found my way to establish a career in it. For me, it wasn't a lucky chance of a director spotting me in a coffee shop. I had to find my way out of the maze.
I belong to an orthodox Keralite family, so my parents were initially not confident, but with my debut and dedication, everything seemed to fall into place. My Amma and Patti are my most incredible support now!
After numerous auditions, 1920 became my debut film from where people started recognising me in the throbbing city of Bombay & being in front of the camera comforted me! When I first faced the camera, it clicked to me that my passion is not limited to just dancing, I love being in front of the camera too. And that's how it all began.
My amma is a classical dancer, and I learned Kathak throughout my childhood and even got a degree. Singing, gymnastics, and acting are things very close to my heart.
It wasn't easy even after getting the first movie, and I kept working. I did many Telugu and Hindi films before appearing in the movie that has now garnered attention from across the country- The Kerala Story. I feel like I’ve waited a hundred years to get this role, and I am so grateful.
Looking at the blockbuster response from the audience for Kerala Story, I hope it gives hope to so many other female-led stories where women have a strong voice. I hope there are more such stories and we don't discriminate based on gender.
I've always believed in women supporting other women. That's how we can grow in society and this industry. So not just for me, I would want every other girl to have a strong character that she can take to the next level and which helps her grow.
With a heart full of gratitude for all the love showered upon me, my attitude of never giving up makes me alive & discover things I love and I'm thankful every single day!”
