Aarya 2 Trailer: Bollywood has had few treats for fans in form of female authoritative figures. The role of mafia queens is of them. From Seema Biswas to Vidya Balan, the female actors have embraced the grey characters and became fan favourites.
One of the actors, Sushmita Sen, who recently made her mark in the similar genre series Aarya, is coming back again to the viewers with the second season of the series. The first season got massive praise from the viewers and to top it all, it got nominated for Emmy Awards this year. Trailer of Aarya 2 released on November 25 and showed Sen's character make a comeback in the chaos she had left earlier. The single woman goes out of the way to protest her kids from the mafia world the enemies at her throat. The show has been directed by Ram Madhvani and will start streaming with new episodes from November 27 on Disney+ Hotstar.
Here are five female actors who played mafia queens in Bollywood films:
Supriya Pathak
The veteran actor earlier famous for the role of naïve and delightful Hansa in popular television show Khichdi stunned the audience when she was seen holding the ropes in Ram Leela, a film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She again embraced the role the matriarch in another show titled Cartel in 2021. Talking about the characters, Pathak told the media, "Speaking about her character Supriya Pathak shares, “I am playing the head of a mafia family for the second time and I wanted to play it differently. Rani Maai is very different from Dhankor, so I had to make sure that it’s not repetitive. The walk, stance, and everything was very different from my previous character."
Vidya Balan
In 2017 film Begum Jaan, Balan played the lead role of a woman who runs a brothel and doesn't get pushed over by any man. The story set during the times of partition shows her dealing with political struggle and still striving to keep her business floating. Her character knew how to draw the line and maintains her boundaries. She dies for her honours.
Alia Bhatt
The upcoming film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Gangubai Kathiawadi is going to have Alia Bhatt play the lead role of a brothel queen from yesteryear's Kamathipura. The film is based on a book titled Mafia Queens Of Bombay and is going to release in 2022. It is the first time that Bhatt will be seen in such a bold character.
Shraddha Kapoor
Shraddha Kapoor played the role of Aapa, underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's sister in the film Haseena Parkar which released in 2017. Kapoor went through a massive transformation to be able to play the role. The film featured Shraddra’s journey from a 17-year-old teenager to a 43-year-old. From weight gain to prosthetics and heavy make-up, the actress put in a lot of hardwork for her onscreen avatar.
Seema Biswas
Seema Biswas was probably one of the first few female actors taking playing the woman's role on camera who chose the life of crime. In the film Bandit Queen of 1994, she played the role of Phoolan Devi and even got recognition in form a National Award. The film traced Phoolan Devi’s journey from her marriage to the atrocities she faced, eventually her inclusion in a gang and surrender to the police.
