Important Dates Phalgun Month : March is also known as the Phalgun month of the Hindu Lunar Calendar. Phalgun month is the 12th month of Hindu calendar and hence indicates an end of a lunar year.

In April or the Chaitra month, Hindus celebrate the beginning of their new year. It is believed that Lord Govinda, a face of Lord Vishnu, is the presiding God of Phalgun month. Govinda etymologically means the protector of cows, lord of cows and the one who lifted the Govardhanagiri mountain with his little finger.

This month is significant because it marks the end of winter season and the onset of spring season. Moreover, phalgun month draws its significance from scriptures as most of the important events of Hindu mythology is believed to have happened around this month. Here is a list of the important mythological episodes that took place in Phalgun month:

  1. As per belief, Mahabharata and Ramayanabegan in Phalgun month. The war between Rama and Ravana started in Phalgun month during Phalguna Bahula Padyami.
  2. War between Lakshman and Meghanadh in Ramayana also happened in Phalgun month. It started in Phalgun Bahula Ekadashi and ended in Phalgun Amavasya.
  3. In Mahabharata, Arjuna was  born in Phalguna Month. Arjuna has often been referred as Phalgun in Mahabharata
