Amavasya or New Moon Day is auspicious for the Hindu religion for multiple reasons. Firstly, New Moon day marks the beginning of a new month in the Hindu lunar calendar that has 29 months. Secondly, many important festivals are also celebrated on this day like Diwali which falls on the Amavasya of Kartik mass. Thirdly, since Amavasya is the beginning of a new month, it is considered to be the best time to end our old old habits, negative thoughts, enmity etc. And fourth and the most important significance of the day is that on Amavasya, the devotees offer prayers and offerings to their dead ancestors to seek their blessings and get rid of pitru dosh. This ritual is known as shraddh.
