Hyderabad resident Pradeep says his COVID-19 positive mother died after being turned away by a COVID-19 hospital.
On April 18, the man took his COVID-19 positive mother to several hospitals in Telangana, including the COVID-19 facility Gandhi Hospital. He was unable to secure a bed for his mother Jayamma. On their way home, she passed away.
Pradeep told NDTV that the ambulance carrying her was parked outside the COVID-19 hospital, but the hospital authorities informed him that they could not admit her without a COVID-19 positive certificate.
Pradeep stated that his mother was tested at a state-run primary health centre, but they only wrote the words “COVID-19 positive” behind the copy of her Aadhaar card. No certificate was sent, and the Gandhi Hospital refuse to accept the piece of paper as evidence. Pradeep recorded a video of his mother gasping for air right as she waited for help outside the hospital in the ambulance. After his COVID-19 positive mother passed away, Pradeep took her body home in the same ambulance they arrived in.
Pradeep stated that “If you are from the middle class and you become Covid-19 positive, there is no one who comes to your help. You are on your own. That much I have understood.” He also got a COVID-19 test taken and is awaiting the result. Pradeep added that he regretted that his mother attended a temple event where over 50 people were present, many without masks.
He stated that “All I would say is make no such mistakes. Wear a mask, maintain social distance, make sure you don’t contact the virus. Because if you do, your options are very limited.”
The Associated Press reported that India recorded more than 250,000 new COVID-19 cases in one day. More than 1,700 deaths were recorded and hospitals in India have run out of beds and medical oxygen, and require more ventilators.
