It's no small irony that the financial services company, State Street Corporation that installed the Fearless Girl statue on Wall Street has agreed to pay $5 million to settle allegations that it underpaid female and black employees.
A Department of Labor investigation from 2012 found that the company paid 305 women who held the positions of senior vice president, managing director or vice president less than their male counterparts. The probe concluded that the women earned lower base salaries, bonuses and total compensation than men. It also concluded that 15 black VPs were paid less than white employees in the same position.
Even though the company has defaulted from its own idea of installing this statue, the influence the fearless girl has on the people is profound and should not be taken down
The “Fearless Girl” statue was installed to advertise the State Street's SPDR Gender Diversity exchange-traded fund, comprised of companies with greater gender diversity among their senior leadership than other companies in their sector. Some have mocked the statute as “fake corporate Feminism,” suggesting that the statue is less about promoting gender equity than it is a publicity stunt. They see the instalment as a successful marketing feat masquerading as a message of female empowerment. Others lament the use of a young girl’s image to represent the ambitions and goals of grown women. While many embraced the statue as a symbol of female empowerment and gender equality.

While the statue received a mixed response during its installation, the debate between those who support and condemn it has been irked again because of the latest development. There are motions requesting for the permanence of the statue while at the same time many want it to be removed. While this debate may go on and on, the experience of standing at Bowling Green as a tourist is exceptional. The statue is seen as a symbol of inspiration to many kids who flock the area as a part of either their school trip or vacation. The Fearless Girl statue may disregard the purpose of the bull to some extent considering it was put up as a marketing strategy for a firm’s index fund, but it surely does boost a sense of elation among the people who visit it.
The Fearless Girl statue through my lens was a shot that was nothing short of spectacular. One needs forbearance to click a picture with the little girl as she is the celebrity that every visitor wants to get clicked with. The girl as perceived by the critics as a misrepresentation of American womanhood is nothing but one of those unreasoned laments. The girl, in fact, is seen as a symbol of pride, inspiring girls to embrace womanhood at such a tender age. I was one of those lucky ones who needed forbearance to get clicked with the fearless girl and I call it lucky deliberately because that’s exactly when I realised what the statue meant for all those who walked the streets of New York to find this iconic junction. There was a group of students who happened to be there to catch a glimpse of the new addition at Bowling Green. The way they perceived the statue was a sense of adulation of how it portrayed women power and how important it is for them to be strong and face daily challenges bravely.

Considering how the critics have called it a misrepresentation of womanhood and denounced that the comparison of women leaders to that of a 9-year-old girl is something that is a hypocrite. The statue is seen as a mark of womanhood, with a beautiful thought of disseminating the idea of leadership. The beauty of the statue lies in the very fact that it is a little girl, otherwise, anybody can walk to Madame Tussauds to click a picture with their woman leaders. The reason why it is so famous is that of its unique thought. Walking through the streets of New York, I’m sure that one is definitely going to comprehend that none of the statues is celebrated as this one and this is also one of the reasons why people petitioned for its permanence.
Even though the company has defaulted from its own idea of installing this statue, the influence the fearless girl has on the people is profound and should not be taken down. Let this statue empower girls to become women.
