Do you know that one in three smart phone users in India run out of space on their phones daily? And the main culprit behind this is the volley of Good Morning messages our smartphones have to store every single day.
With over 460 million using the internet (according to a report on Statista) and the availability of affordable smart phone, Indians are loving every moment of being able to connect with their near and dear ones. They want to stay connected morning, noon and night.
This interaction begins at five thirty in the morning, by sending good morning messages to their friends and family members on WhatsApp.
A simple Good Morning message is not enthusiastic enough
We believe that the more elaborate and technically superior a Good Morning message is, the better the peers’ day will turn out to be. Hence, a simple message saying good morning is never enough. Earlier, when the social media was in its infantile state, people use to resort to forwarded messages on the emails, which would turn morning in to the afternoon, if one ever chose to read them till the end.
But now most people prefer to send picture and videos as good morning messages.
Such is the popularity of good morning messages, that there are websites dedicated to providing good morning enthusiasts with new images every day!
Now you know where your grandma has been sending you those pictures of birds, rainbows, sunrise, mountains, babies, flowers and deities.
The terror of received messages
Raise your hand if you shiver from terror every morning, as your phone vibrates to let you know of another message received. The dynamics in Indian culture forbids us from ignoring our WhatsApp messages.
You have to address the arrival of each of these messages and reply with an equally cheery good morning message. And no, you cannot recycle old messages Or pretend to have seen them, while you have disabled auto download on your phone.
You never know when, who and where, might put you through an intense viva, based on all the good morning messages the said external had sent you in the past month. “Did you see that Good Morning message that I sent you?” puts any youngster into a state of panic which is otherwise experienced only when the doctor holds your blood test reports.
So. Much. Work
The Good Morning messages take up so much space on our smartphones, that we run out of storage space in every couple of days. This is a problem for people in their 60s or above, who tend to get emotionally attached to their good morning images. It is hard for them to delete wishes of a good day from their sons, daughters, sisters, friends, ex-colleagues, milkman, presswala and “Internetwala bhaiyya”. Especially if deities and cute babies get involved in the process.
Thus, the heartless and tedious task of clearing off their phones falls on the younger generation.
But alas! It’s not as easy as opting for the delete all option. Each photo has to be individually reviewed and debated on before it is trashed.
The deleted photos are then given a teary-eyed eulogy, and we are taunted for being heartless and aloof.
We can only hope that developers come up with an app soon, which would check our Good Morning messages daily and respond to them. This needs to happen before deities, puppies and babies find a way of emerging out of our social media feed and wishing us “Good Morning” in person.
