What College Goers Do To Ensure Their Safety Outside

One of the most important things that often bothers parents about their daughters and the girls themselves is their safety. One can come across to a lot of conversation happening around the concern of the safety of girls. Whether it's a discussion among parents to send their daughters on an office trip or using social media for long hours, safety always gets due priority.

For college girls who travel long distances alone or probably get late some times, safety issues need to be taken care of. Women across the world have been waiting for some appropriate measures and strict guidelines to ensure their safety. Moreover, whatever has been done to date is obviously not enough.

“I think Delhi is safe for girls till 10 pm at night. Considering that, I decide my schedules accordingly. If I need to go out after this time, I prefer going out with some friends or else I inform my parents beforehand,”

But, how to ‘be smart’ is what girls have learned through their experiences. They take precautions, maintain their lifestyle, and plan their schedules taking proper considerations. SheThePeople.TV talked to a few girls to know about their views on safety.

Women's Safety

“I have something to share which would completely resonate with the safety issue. In 2013, I was about to complete my Senior Secondary examinations and my family and I were making plans that I should do my Bachelor’s from Delhi University. I was even studying hard to crack the DU cut-off list. But, later in December 2012, the heinous crime in Delhi happened and my parents got too scared for me that they didn't send me to Delhi. So, I had to do my graduation from my hometown itself. It took me a hard time to convince my parents to send me to Delhi to do my Master’s,” said Manvi Shukla, an ex-alumni of Jamia Millia Islamia.

“When I made it to the Delhi University cut-off list last year, my parents were happy. But, I could sense that they were equally worried about me at the same time. Once, I overheard my parents when they were talking about how I would manage everything alone in a new city. Initially, they used to call me every hour asking if I am okay or not. It has been over a year now and I still send my live location to my parents whenever I go to some faraway place and inform them before I leave and after coming back,” said Tanushi Mishra, a student of Kamala Nehru College.

'Be smart, be safe'

Akshita Bansal, ex-alumni of IIMC said, “I had to go to Agra, UP for some reporting assignment. I was travelling with my female colleague but still, we were so worried. Thus, just to ensure our safety, after checking out from the metro station, we bought a pepper spray and a knife. After that, I have always been conscious of my safety and I take adequate precautions for that. I never leave my home without a pepper spray.”

But, how to ‘be smart’ is what girls have learned through their experiences. They take precautions, maintain their lifestyle, and plan their schedules taking proper considerations.

Mitali Bansal, a student of Kamala Nehru College said, “I am too scared to even go out in Delhi in broad daylight. I don't know why I feel this way. I always have a feeling that someone might be following me. For that, I always look back from time to time. For others, I may be stupid but for me, Delhi isn't safe and I am always alert and conscious about my surroundings.”
