Sehmat was an ordinary girl who was selected and trained for spying. Alia portrayed all the emotions of fear, love, patriotism, etc with great easy on the big screen. With no mass appeal item songs or a bodybuilder hero, Alia pulled off this film purely through her raw acting and talent. Raazi did a splendid box office collection of 207 crores.
Safeena in Gully Boy
Released this year, Gully Boy is one of the most successful films of 2019 till now. The film was directed by Zoya Akhtar, a director, who broke the notion that portraying larger than life lives of rich people on the silver screen will blockbusters. The film’s story is based on the lives of people living in slums, their struggles, status in the society and their viewpoint towards life. Safeen played by Alia is a fearless practitioner, who is outspoken and brave. Safeena connected with the audience because of her natural possessive emotion towards her boyfriend Murad, played by Ranveer Singh. She was pure, supportive yet protective towards Murad. The fighting sequence between Safeena and Albina was the highlight of the movie; everyone loved the natural acting by Alia. Gully Boy managed to cross 220 crores at the box office.
Pinky in Udta Punjab
This film is one of the career-best performances by Alia. Surrounded by controversies, Udta Punjab released in 2016. The film was based on the drug mafia of Punjab, the cross border drug rackets. How four, totally different lives get ruined due to drugs. Pinky played by Alia was a hockey aspirant from a small village of Bihar, who ran away from her house to join the Indian hockey team. Unfortunately, she falls into the vicious drug racket. Her journey, the traumas she faces, the repeated drug abuse and her escape from that drug mafia is beautifully portrayed by Alia. In her Bhojpuri accent, Pinky's pain and agony connected with the audience and became one of the best performances by Alia.
Veera in Highway
Imtiaz Ali directed Highway (2014) was a compelling film of life’s journey and self-discovery. Veera played by Alia was a faint-hearted, suppressed-bride to be. Veera gets kidnapped before her wedding which became a blessing in disguise for Veera. A suppressed and subdued Veera found for herself new freedom, life experiences and her dreams throughout this unusual journey. The most compelling part of the film was when Veera talks about the sexual abuse she experienced in her childhood from non-other than her own uncle. While talking about the predatory nature of 'men' from our own family, Veera burst into tears narrating the trauma she faced. This particular scene won the hearts and proved Alia's acting range.

Directed by celebrated female director Gauri Shinde, staring Alia and Shahrukh Khan, Dear Zindagi released in 2016. Even after being cast alongside a mega star like Shahrukh, Alia stole the show. After multiple relationships, and failure in her career, Kaira played by Alia experiences insomnia and consults a psychiatrist Dr Jehangir Khan played by Shahrukh. This film is one of the much-celebrated and progressive films of this generation as it openly talks about mental health and depression. Kaira, battling depression in search of her mental peace is a beautiful portrayal by Alia.
Tia in Kapoor & Sons
Released in 2016, Kapoor & Sons by Shakun Batra bought on the gay community on the silver screen as normal human beings with normal life problems. The movie broke the norm of conventional comic relief roles that were played by gay characters in the past. Tia played by Alia was a lively and aspiring individual. She had a comparatively smaller role but with a hard-hitting impact on the audience. Tia, giving the message of loving your dear ones after losing her own parents in a plane crash, emotionally connected with the audience.
Vaidehi in Badrinath ki Dulhania
Badrinath ki Dulhania was a complete package of masala Bollywood entertainment. There was much more than just catchy Bollywood songs and typical Bollywood romance, to it. Vaidehi played by Alia was a career driven independent and strong-minded girl. Even after falling in love Vaidehi chose her career over love and went to pursue her dream of being an Air Hostess. Breaking the convention of marriage and settling down, she chooses to be financially independent by building her career. Alia's portrayal of a career-oriented woman was commendable in this movie, proving it's not wrong to follow your dream or be a 'career-oriented woman' rather than just being someone's wife.
