Meghan Markle Oprah Winfrey interview: In the much-anticipated interview of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle reveals the reason behind breaking her silence now.
In a new clip from the interview, which will be broadcasted on CBS, the couple open up about why they “did not feel free to speak candidly sooner”.
In the video, introduced by Gayle King introduced on CBS This Morning on Friday, Winfrey recalled the time when she called Meghan.
“I called you either or February or March 2018 before the wedding asking, ‘Would you please get me an interview,’ and you said, ‘I’m sorry, it’s not the right time,’” she said.
Meghan assured that she remembers their conversation and further added, “I wasn’t even allowed to have the conversation with you personally, right?”
Oprah Winfrey, proceeded the conversation and mentioned that there were other people in the room.
“You turned me down nicely and said ‘Perhaps there will be another time, when there’s the right time,’” the talk show host said.
And, now that the Royal couple are on the show, Winfrey asked them, “What is right about this time?”
“Well, so many things. That we’re on the other side of a lot of, a lot of life experience that’s happened. And also that we have the ability to make our own choices in a way that I couldn’t have said yes to you then, that wasn’t my choice to make,” the Suits actor explained.
“As an adult who lived a really independent life to then go into this construct that is, um, different than I think what people imagine it to be, it’s really liberating to be able to have the right and the privilege in some ways to be able to say, ‘Yes ... I’m ready to talk,’” Meghan added.
So far in the interview with Oprah Winfrey
Earlier, a trailer of the interview gave viewers a glimpse of the couple’s split with Buckingham Palace last year.
The clips were released soon after Markle, 39, accused Buckingham Palace of “perpetuating falsehoods about us”. During the interview, Oprah asked her about how she felt about the palace hearing her “speak your truth today”. To which, she responded by saying, “I don’t know how they could expect that after all this time, we would still just be silent if there is an active role that The Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us. And if that comes with risk of losing things, I mean, there’s a lot that’s been lost already.”
The major chunk of the interview will be between Meghan Markle and the show host, Oprah Winfrey, the Prince will join them at the end. It will be aired in the UK on 8 March on ITV at 9 pm.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle confirmed that they would not return to royal family duties in February. A statement released by Buckingham Palace asserted the declaration.
“The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of the Royal Family,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
