ISIS Bride Shamima Begum: Shamima Begum, the British-born ISIS bride, ditches her traditional Islamic garb. At her Syrian refugee camp, she was photographed in Western attire.
Donning a striped T-shirt and zip-up sweater, the 21-year-old looked, unlike her previous guise. In 2019 she was spotted in a black niqab when she declared her support for the terrorist group.
Earlier this year, in February, Shamima’s request to return to the United Kingdom was turned down by Britain’s Supreme Court. The British woman is now stuck in the Al Roj detention camp. She has lost the fight for the restoration of her citizenship because she poses a security risk.
A unanimous ruling by the Supreme Court overturned a decision by the Court of Appeal last year, which had held that Begum must be allowed to return so she can have a fair appeal in her case.
Also, a human rights group named Liberty defended ISIS bride Shamima Begum by saying that the Court’s current approach does not serve the purpose.
“It’s a cynical distraction from a failed counter-terror strategy and another example of this Government’s disregard for access to justice and the rule of law, ” said Rosie Brighouse, a lawyer with Liberty.
Who is Shamima Begum?
In 2015, Shamima Begum, at the age of 15 she and two other schoolgirls from London fled to Syria to join the terror group. Later she married one of its fighters, a Dutch-born Yago Riedijk. As per the BBC, Begum was found, nine months pregnant, in a Syrian refugee camp in February 2019. The baby later died of pneumonia.
Shamima Begum was born to Bangladeshi parents in England. She ran away from London with two of her friends to Syria to supposedly bring back Sharmeena Begum, a friend who had travelled there in 2014.
