'He Forced Me To Continue Singing': Asha Bhosle On First Husband

Asha Bhosle On First Husband: The veteran singer had got married at the age of 16 to her first husband who was a 31-year-old. She shared in an old interview with PTI that she was discouraged by her first husband in her plans of becoming a homemaker. He also persuaded her to continue working as a singer. She turned 88 on September 8.

Talking about her first husband, Asha Bhosle had said, "All that I sought, then, was to keep house and play the mother to my first-born: Hemant. But my husband would not hear of my giving up the mic. He forced me to continue singing. Left to myself, I would have definitely quit."

Asha Bhosle married Ganpatrao Bhosle after their romantic courtship days. They had three children together before they separated in 1960. The veteran singer shared that as she married a man who was 20 years older, her sister Lata Mangeshkar was not speaking to her for a long time.

Bhosle shared that even though her husband was supportive of her career as a superstar singer, her husband's family on the other hand was very conservative and couldn't handle a daughter-in-law being a superstar icon. Bhosle shared that she was pregnant with her youngest son Anand when she decided to separate from her husband because of the abuse and ill-treatment she faced from his family.

Asha Bhosle shared, "I do not blame anyone and have no ill will. I feel if I had not met Mr Bhosle, I would not have had these three amazing children and life turned out okay."

After almost twenty years after her separation, she married music director RD Burman who was a few years younger to her. The couple got married in 1979. However, towards the end of Burman's life, the couple did not stay together.
