WBJEE 2021: The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE 2021) is likely to be conducted on July 11.
Last year, the examination was held on February 2. But this year, taking into consideration the COVID-19 pandemic situations as well as the state assembly elections, the delay has occurred.
The chairman of WBJEE, Malayendu Saha said, "As schools, colleges are yet to open, it will be difficult for us to get the exam centres. Also, there are assembly elections, therefore we decided to conduct WBJEE in July."
Delay in WBJEE 2021 can have repercussions on admissions
This delay in the entrance exam can have repercussion's on the admission process to colleges in the state since WBJEE 2021 will be only held months after JEE Main. This is contrary to last year's scenario when most of the colleges, government and private were running with vacant seats for years and hence the exams were conducted earlier in the year.
Last year, over 20, 000 engineering seats were vacant in both government and private engineering colleges in the state. This is around 60 per cent of the total seats in the state for the degree course.
"The meritorious students will opt for engineering colleges based on JEE Main ranking before the conduct of the state engineering entrance here," said Jadavpur University teacher Partha Pratim Biswas.
He also added that the state engineering entrance exams can be conducted twice a year like JEE which is now being held four times a year. He is of the opinion that this attempt will be of advantage to the students. Jadavpur University is one of the reputed institutions in the state. However, the delayed WBJEE will impact the admission process of these colleges'.
The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology have around 196 engineering colleges in the state-affiliated to it. The Vice-Chairman of the university, Saikat Maitra noted, "The delayed exam likely to impact the admission process as students may opt for taking admission in local colleges and institutes considering the pandemic situations rather than going outside."
