• Wrestler Family Saga Dangal Collects Over Rs 375 Crore

Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal is still raking in the moolah, clearly becoming one of Disney’s biggest overseas successes. It’s been at the theatres for almost a month now. The film, based on a real life wrestler family, generated a huge buzz amongst people and is still going strong.

One of the main reason that forces us (yes, I’m being very specific!) to watch Dangal over and over again is its powerpacked performances and that constant spur that keeps you at the edge of your seat. I mean, c’mon who would want to miss watching India’s first woman wrestler win the gold at the international platform, right?

So Dangal is dominating the box office and according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, who closely documented the collections, it is nothing but a “historic” record.

According to NDTV, Dangal‘s record-breaking success at the box office currently stands at Rs 376.14 crore, reports Taran Adarsh. Dangal holds the record for highest single day earnings. Released on December 23, 2016, Dangal even surpassed PK‘s home collection of Rs 340 crore. Clearly, it is the highest-ever grossing film in Hindi-language cinema.

Also, in the past four weeks, Dangal has reportedly earned more than $70 million in ticket sales, according to koimoi.com. Its overseas collection, too, figures at $29.04 million. The numbers for USA and Canada are over $12 million.

Aamir Khan played the Haryanvi wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat in the biopic and certainly we can all agree that this is one of his career’s best performances.

Dangal even brought Aamir Khan to the Filmfare Best Actor award category earlier this month, when he said in a statement, “I am absolutely overwhelmed with all the love that Dangal has got. It is one of the most passionate responses I have ever received. I want to thank everyone for owning the film as their own. It’s the biggest compliment a creative person can receive. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. And thank you Nitesh Tiwari (director),” reported PTI.

I think I’m correct when I say this, but Dangal is one fantastic story that no Indian would give a miss. It wouldn’t be unrealistic to say that it’s everyone’s story – a story that all of us who once overcame the societal pressure and emerged champion would relate to. After all, defying all odds and stereotypes, fearlessly, not giving up on dreams are what we all learn from the biopic.

The remarkable tale of the  champion wrestling family, especially Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat, and the man who is behind their success: the feminist father – Mahavir Singh Phogat – will leave a thought in you even after months of watching the film.

To see the end of the story where Geeta and Babita respectively took a gold and silver medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and have been winning international accolades ever since – is inspiring – so thousands of people are still waiting in queue to watch the film again and again.

Dangal has debut actresses Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra, who gave commendable performances as Phogat’s daughters – Geeta and Babita in the film. The Nitesh Tiwari-directed film also features child artistes Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar as the younger versions of Geeta and Babita.

If we think closely, it’s not at all a big surprise that the film is getting so much popularity as it deserves the stardom. It’s a celebration of life and realisation of dreams where the wrestler family showed us how to break barriers, to be a rebel in a place where its needed the most and to achieve what was unachievable from society’s point of view.
