• Winter Basics for Healthy Skin

Winter is coming! And with winter comes not only fun sweaters, hot tea, and cuddling under a blanket with a book, but also uncomfortably dry skin. But you need not worry. Here are some tips from Mumbai’s most sought after dermatologist, Dr. Malavika Kohli which we promise will help you keep your skin healthy and moisturised.

    1. Pick out hydrating products.

Dr. Kohli advises using products which are paraben and sulphate free. She also recommends using products which contain essential fatty oils.

What are parabens and sulphates? They are chemicals used in products which prevent bacteria. They are known to be very drying and can irritate your scalp. There are may natural based products you can use which do not utilise these ingredients.

    2. Keep re-applying moisturiser.

It isn’t enough to apply moisturiser only once at the beginning of your day. Kohli recommends re-applying moisturiser every 6-8 hours. You must take special care of your hands, feet and lips since they tend to get very dry she says. If you have cracked feet, using mild urea based cream will help reduce the cracks and will exfoliate the feet.

Lips must be moisturised every 2 hours to keep them hydrated and crack-free!

    3. Hair care is important.

In order to take care of your hair, you can use a pure compress coconut oil, says the dermatologist. After gently heating up the oil, apply it on your hair, tie your hair up with a hot steam towel and leave for two hours. Coconut oil can also be helpful for the face. Dr. Kohli recommends applying it gently, leaving it on for ten minutes, and then removing using cotton or a soft towel, soaked in lukewarm water.

    4. Just because it is winter, doesn’t mean you don’t need sunscreen!

Dr. Kohli says that everyone must use at least an SPF 40 sunscreen. No sun doesn’t mean no sunscreen! Silicon based sunscreens which also moisturise skin, are most recommended!
