• Why Should There Be Shame Around Menstruation? Asks Twinkle Khanna

“Why should there be shame around Menstruation?” asks Twinkle Khanna who’s taken on the producer’s role for an upcoming film, ‘Padman’, which depicts the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham — known as the India’s ‘Menstruation Man’.

In a recent interview with Times of India, the former actress and author of ‘Mrs Funnybones’ exposed a certain mindset due to which Indians still shy away from openly voicing or discussing a topic like menstruation.

Asked what was her intention behind making ‘Padman’, Khanna said, “It is a subject I believe in. It’s a subject that I have written extensively about. Menstruation is a taboo not just in our country but all over the world. It’s not something which is openly discussed and I really don’t see the logic in it. It’s a biological function, why should there be shame around it. That is what I am trying and hoping to describe through ‘Padman’.”

Twinkle’s bold and witty remarks are what made Mrs. Funnybones a hit on social media. Khanna is now advocating to speak up about menstruation. Being among the front-row feminists in the industry, Khanna is the perfect combination of bold and gutsy. By choosing to make a film about the taboo topic, the author is trying to break the stereotypes that hold people back from being frank about a natural process that women go through every month.

Khanna has authored two books and now the mother-of-two is donning the hat of a producer for ‘Padman’ in which her husband Akshay Kumar would be playing the role of Arunachalam Muruganantham. The film is based on the real life story of the man from Tamil Nadu who made a low-cost sanitary pad making machines for rural India.

By inventing it, India’s ‘Menstruation Man’ holds up the light to spread awareness among women about unhygienic practices and also teaches them how to deal with periods while living in rural India which does not have the best of opportunities.
