Dr. Annapurni Subramaniam, the Director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, shared her fascinating journey from growing up in a family of musicians to becoming a renowned astrophysicist. "I grew up in a remote village where I could see stars. Now it’s not even possible to see the Sun. I was always mesmerized by the nighttime, as well as watching the Milky Way in the morning from my hometown," she reflected. Despite being raised in a family of musicians, Dr. Annapurni pursued her passion for astrophysics, overcoming conservative traditions and rigid schedules.

Navigating the Cosmos: Dr Nandini Harinath's Odyssey through Space Missions

Dr. Nandini Harinath, the Deputy Director of the Spacecraft Operations Area at ISRO, brought a unique perspective to the panel. Coming from an educated family, she emphasized the impact of being raised by working parents. "Children of working parents are brought up differently. They’re totally independent, bold, and strong," she explained. Dr Nandini's journey involved cycling alone to school at the age of 8 and obtaining her driving license at 18, showcasing the independence instilled by her family. She expressed gratitude for her parents, who served as her inspiration.

She also was able to point out just how far India has come by stating, "Way back when I joined ISRO, there were very few women in the division that I worked because these missions call for, especially during the launch times, for long hours of work. Not many women wanted to volunteer or come to this division itself. Today we see that there are so many women who are mission directors, and it’s ironical that what was once considered a domain not suitable for women, today women have earned the tag of being reliable and very very dependable in it!"

Chasing the Sun: Dr Nigar Shaji's Quest for Rare Challenges

Dr Nigar Shaji, the Project Director of Aditya L1 Mission at ISRO, known as the "Sunny Lady of India," shared her passion for taking on rare challenges. "From the beginning, I always wanted to do something rare," she explained. Driven by her parents' emphasis on education and financial independence, Dr. Nigar defied societal norms to pursue engineering. She emphasized the supportive environment at ISRO, where there is no 'glass ceiling' for women, and opportunities are given based on merit.
