Editor of The Hindu Malini Parthasarthy stepped down today in what’s come as a surprise in the world of journalism. The reason behind her acquittal is reportedly being attributed to the amount of money spent on the launch of their recent Mumbai edition.
The board announced the news of her resignation to all the employees in The Hindu. Suresh Nambath, National Editor of The Hindu, has been assigned the role of interim editor. He will now take care of the daily affairs of the newspaper until a new editor-in-chief is appointed.
“Malini Parthasarathy has tendered her resignation as the Editor of The Hindu with immediate effect. After due process, the resignation has been accepted by the Board. Until we find a suitable replacement, the National Editor of The Hindu, Suresh Nambath, will be taking care of the day-to-day affairs of the paper. An internal communication has been sent to all the employees of The Hindu,” said N Ram, Chairman of The Hindu’s Board of Directors to The News Minute.
Malini was appointed last year on February 1 when the then editor N.Ravi, full-time Director stepped down from his position. In less than a year, Malini has left The Hindu.
Reports speculate that The Hindu is going through a turbulent times with no editor ready to take charge for a longer time. It was alleged that The Hindu is hiring from its own family lineage, the tradition that had been brokem with the appointment of Siddharth Vardharajan in 2013. However he also resigned quite early and publicly on Twitter. After which the then senior journalist, Malini was appointed.
“The Board noted that Dr. Malini Parthasarathy has the rare distinction of being The Hindu’s first woman Editor, and wished her the very best in taking The Hindu to greater heights,” said a The Hindu report at the time of Malini’s appointment
Malini is the family member of the owners of The Hindu, Kasturi and Sons Limited. Her grandfather Kasturi Ranga Iyengar took over the 138-year-old newspaper in 1905. During Malini’s term, she was involved in some appointments at the higher level, but some trusted editors also left during that time itself like P.Sainath and Praveen Swami.
