What comes as a boon for abandoned women, the Telangana government on Sunday launched the single-women pension scheme across the state, according to which single women will now be credited Rs 1,000 per month. The welfare scheme is reportedly the first such scheme in India.

In the towns of Chinnakoduru and Nunganuru of Siddipet, a total of 836 women beneficiaries received their pension papers from Telangana Deputy Chief Ministers Kadiyam Srihari and Mohammad Mahmood Ali. According to them, earlier, the government had provided a pension amount of only Rs 200, but now the amount has been increased and there will be around 36 lakh beneficiaries. The idea is to back single women and ensure a better society, said Minister for Finance and Civil Supplies Eatala Rajender.

The gravity of securing the future of single women came to the fore after some petitions on the plight of women who are deserted by their husbands and relatives. The government has there decided to distribute pension of Rs. 1,000 per month to such helpless women on humanitarian grounds, which includes senior citizens, widows, disabled persons, and beedi workers.

Additionally, in Ranga Reddy district, 13,258 single women are being given pensions. "This is a scheme that will benefit unmarried women, joginis and divorced women," said Transport Minister Mahendar Reddy, who launched the scheme at Medchal, Vikarabad, Keesara, Rajendranagar, Chevella, Parigi and Kodangal.

Officials have charted out 1,08,302 beneficiaries in 31 districts. Indeed a good move!
