Since the evolution of humankind, right from giving birth to babies, to working and earning for the family to climbing the highest mountains, women have made their mark in every phase of life. She deserves to be applauded. She is the preserver and protector of humankind.

Every year, thousands around the world attempt to climb to the top of Mt Everest. There is, however, a very short window of favourable weather to do so (before the onset of monsoon in June). Many have lived to see the dream and by sheer force of willpower have finally scaled the peak. Several Indian women mountaineers have scaled the Mount Everest and have also become the first woman to do so in different categories.

Read on to know more about few such gutsy women: 

  • Anshu Jamsenpa: Very recently, Arunachal Pradesh’s Anshu Jamsenpa, a 32-year-old mother of two, has become the only lady to scale Mount Everest twice in five days. Earlier, her first attempt of climbing Everest was in the year 2011.

 

  • Bachendri Pal: How can one forget of Bachendri Pal? She was the first Indian woman to reach Everest in the year 1984. She is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records and has also received the country’s fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri and the Arjuna Award by the Government of India.

  • Arunima Sinha is also on the list of Indian women climbers as the first woman amputee in the world to reach up to the peak in the year 2013. She took her formal training as a mountaineer under the guidance of Bachendri Pal. With a prosthetic leg, she scaled up the peak showing to the world that nothing is impossible. She received Padma Shri in 2015.

 

  • Malavath Purna, a 13-year-old did wonders by reaching the summit of Mount Everest in 2014. On 25 May 2014, Poorna scaled the highest peak  at the age of 13 years and 11 months, and is currently the youngest girl to have reached the summit of Everest.

 

  • Tashi and Nungshi Malik: In the year 2013, Tashi and Nungshi Malik became the first twin sisters to climb the Everest peak at the age of 21. Along with this, the duo also holds the world record of reaching North and South Pole. They are also the first Indian women to climb all the seven summits of the world.

  • Santosh Yadav: Another important mountaineer who climbed the Mount Everest twice was Santosh Yadav. In 1992, at the age of 20, she scaled Mt Everest twice setting a world record.

 

  • Dicky Dolma reached Everest in 1993 and was then the youngest woman to summit Mount Everest. She is a great sportswoman, having formal training in skiing and basic mountaineering course.

 

  • Premlata Aggarwal holds the record of being the oldest Indian woman to scale Mount Everest (2011) at the age of 48. She is also the first woman to climb the seven highest peaks of the world.

  • Krushnaa Patil is another Indian woman to have climbed the Everest in 2009 along with scaling the highest peaks in Europe and Antarctica.
