Sprinting to a Rio berth: Dutee Chand qualifies for the Olympics

Odisha sprinter Dutee Chand has qualified for the Rio Olympics in the 100m event.

Dutee Chand's dream of running the tracks at the Olympics has finally come true as the Odisha sprinter qualified for the Games to be held in Rio in August this year.  She has made the cut in the 100m event.

Dutee achieved the feat at the XXVI International Meeting G.Kosanov Memorial in Kazakhstan earlier today by clocking 11.30 seconds in the women's 100m race. She had missed qualifying in April this year at the Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championship in New Delhi, her timing at the event being 11.33 seconds, missing the Olympic qualification mark of 11.32 seconds by a very small margin.  Notably, with this victory, Dutee has also managed to better her own national record.

The last Indian to qualify for this Olympic event was ace athlete PT Usha in the 1980 Olympics.
