“I would have been happy if they had given good enough reasons why this bill is going to be passed. The reasons that were given were not good enough – that it’s a fashion? I don’t think any woman is doing it for fashionable reasons,” said Farah Khan, reported by NDTV.

Choreographer and Filmmaker Farah Khan is one of the well-known personalities from the film industry who had children with the help of the IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) process. And being the forthright person she is, she reacted to the statement made by Sushma Swaraj while introducing the new Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2016.
The External Affairs minister had said that “We have many examples of celebrities who have their own children, still they have gone for a surrogate child. I am pained to say that the procedure that started as a necessity, has become a hobby of sorts. This is not a thing for pleasure… it has become a fashion these days,” . reported by Ndtv. This while she did not mention any names directly.
Farah married filmmaker Shirish Kunder at 40, took a particular dig about the particular phrase of ‘couple can only go down the surrogacy route after five years of marriage’. “I got married at 40. If I had waited I would have been 45. I had my babies at 43. If I had waited till 45, it would have been impossible for me. Are we now living in a country that tells us what to eat, how to dress, who you can have a child with?” she added.
Although Farah believes in protection of surrogates is necessary in our country but she’s also showed concerns about the newly proposed law which she thinks will eventually backfire. “I’m not saying we shouldn’t regulate surrogacy. Of course, prevent women from exploitation. But by doing this you’re creating an alternate like bootlegging. My worry is that this will cause it to go underground. It will still happen but in a dangerous way,” Farah added.
This is not the first time when celebrities are talking about their experience with surrogacy, in fact there are quite a few Bollywood stars who have chosen to go down the surrogacy road to have children.
Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan become one of many urban Indian couples to opt for surrogacy, lifting the stigma on the increasingly popular medical procedure.
“Kiran and I both wanted a child and when Azad was born, both of us were very happy and we both wanted to be honest with people about it. We haven’t done anything wrong have nothing to hide and people should know about it. So, we also honestly told the media that we have had a child through IVF surrogacy and we are very happy that we did it, it has brought a lot of happiness in our lives,” Actor Aamir Khan and director Kiran Rao told to media five years after the welcomed son Azad, also born through surrogacy.
Most recently actor Tusshar Kapoor became a single father, welcoming his son Laksshya, also via surrogacy.
“Everybody in the country has been very accepting. That was a bit surprise for me because I thought there would be diverse views, some kind of ‘oohs and ahas’ about it, all kinds of opinion. But nothing of that sort happened. Especially the media has been so supportive of Laksshya and my choice of having a family in this manner,” said Tusshar proudly.
Neither SRK, nor Aamir, nor Tusshar Kapoor have made any statement about this issue yet. But surely they must think about the fact that had this proposed law, if it had been in effect then, might have made it difficult for them to become parents.
