Wrestler and Rio Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik has got engaged to her wrestler boyfriend Satyawart Kadian.
After notching up a silver at Rio, Sakshi had earlier announced her relationship with Satyawart in the media but no assurance of getting hitched right away were being made that time. It took the whole country as a surprise when the 24-year-old wrestler exchanged rings with fellow wrestler Satyawart on Sunday. The ceremony was organized at her residence in Rohtak.
“It was a private function. Only the families of the to-be bride and groom attended the event and it went very well,” Satyawart’s father Arjuna Awardee Satyavan Pehelwan said, as reported by Hindustan Times.
The 22-year-old Satyawart, who happens to be two years younger to Sakshi, trains at his father’s akhada in Rohtak, while Sakshi has been training at Sir Chhotu Ram Stadium Wrestling Academy in the same city. A competitor in the 97kg freestyle category, Satyawart was a bronze medalist (his first) at the 2010 Youth Olympics. He won a silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He was the only Indian wrestler to win a medal at the 2013 World Youth wrestling Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.
When Sakshi returned after winning her Olympic bronze, she mentioned that Satyawart’s constant support led her career thi high. “He is very supportive and thinks of my dreams as his own,” she had said earlier.
According to Satyawart’s father, the engagement was fixed a long time ago but the wedding day is yet to be decided. “They are both wrestlers so they have to chalk out dates out of their schedule of endless tournaments. We cannot say anything right now about the wedding,” he said.
