Who Is Sunita Agarwal? Potential Chief Justice Of Gujarat HC

Supreme Court recommended seven names for the states' Chief Justices of the High Court, and Sunita Agarwal is the only woman mentioned.  Known widely as Justice Agarwal, she may now become the next only woman Chief Justice of a High Court after Sonia Gokani.

Who is Sunita Agarwal?

Sunita Agarwal was born in 1966. She registered at the Bar in 1990 and earned a degree in Law from Awadh University. She has been ruling Allahabad Jurisdiction for a long time now and received a lot of attention during the 2020 Zhenhua data leak.

With her growing career, she also became a member of the panel in 2013 that sought to protect women in the workplace from Sexual Harassment which is the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.

At present, she is the seniormost Judge and also an additional judge at the Allahabad High Court, also the country’s largest High Court. To show her dedication and commitment to justice and law, she took an oath to become the permanent judge at Allahabad High Court on August 6, 2013.

With Supreme Court recommending her name to take over the highest position at Gujarat High Court, Agarwal can likely become the next and only woman Chief Justice of a high court after Justice Sonia Gridhar Gokani. Justice Gokani became the first woman Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court after she was recommended by the Chief Justice Of India for the prestigious position. She retired earlier this year

The names are yet to be approved by the Central Government. Collegium has stated in its letter that Sunita Agarwal would be the only woman Chief Justice of the High Courts since there are no other women currently in this position of Chief Justices of the High Court.
