Earlier today, actor-politician Ranjana Nachiyar was arrested by Chennai Police for allegedly hitting and verbally abusing students foot-boarding on a government bus in Kancheepuram. The Tamil Nadu BJP politician allegedly also verbally abused the bus driver, which led to her also being charged for disturbing government officials from performing their duties.
Videos of the school and college-going students dangerously footboarding on the steps of the government bus, and then the altercation between them and Nachiyar have been doing the rounds on social media since November 3. Nachiyar was seen claiming to be a police officer and verbally abusing the bus driver for not ensuring the safety of passengers. She then started pulling down the foot-boarding students, which included school-going children and slapped some of them for resisting to get down from the bus.
Police Takes Action
An FIR has been filed with Chennai's Mangadu Police and Nachiyar has been charged with Sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (assault to deter public servant from discharging duties) and 75j (punishment for cruelty to child) of the Indian Penal Code.
According to the police, they waited outside Ranjana’s door for more than half an hour before she came outside. Nachiyar alleged that male police officers arrived at her house and banged on her window while she was changing inside. Nachiyar demanded an arrest warrant and after a long argument, the actor was arrested and taken to the Mangadu police station.
Ranjana Nachiyar is a Tamil actor-producer known for Thupparivalan, Irumbu Thirai, and Natpe Thunai. She is the niece of National Award-winning filmmaker Bala and granddaughter of Ramanathapuram Samasthanam Raja Bhaskar Sethupathi. She has her own production company, Star Guru Film Productions. She is now a politician with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
