Police officials said the woman hails from Navi Mumbai and has had a case regarding an electricity connection pending for the last six years. She had pretested in 2017 outside the Maharashtra State Electricity Company office, resulting in an FIR filed against her.

The woman told the police on October 2 that the investigating officer in the issue was mentally harassing her and forcing her to transfer the property to his name. She also demanded that the case be heard by a fast-track court.

She carried a banner during her protest, accusing the government of atrocities against Dalit and Muslim women. The police tried to counsel her against the “strip protest,” but she said that if they let her go, she would continue her protest until the chief minister met her. She also threatened to self-immolate and was arrested to prevent such an incident.

Women engaging in strip protests are not new. In October 2022, actor Elnaaz Norouzi, who is known for her role in Sacred Games, shared a video in which she stripped in support of protests in Iran. In the video, she wore several outfits, emphasising that women had their own choice to wear whatever they wanted.

'My body, my choice' was written in the video. It was followed by 'if this is your choice, it's ok', 'and this is ok too', 'your choice, also ok', 'and so is this', and 'and this is ok too'. The video ended with the message 'woman, life, freedom'.

The video post on her Instagram handle came in support of the protest in Iran over Mahsa Amini’s custodial death after she was detained for allegedly violating the strict Islamic dress code for women.
