Surat sets new Guinness World Record on International Yoga Day

United Nations proclaimed 21 June to be World Yoga Day in 2015, to spread awareness and benefits of Yoga worldwide. This year's theme for International Yoga Day is "Yoga For Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" translating to "One-Earth One-Family One Future."

India joined the celebration by setting Guinness World Record and a yoga event in Surat, Gujarat and broke the record for the largest gathering of people for a yoga session.

On the 9th International Yoga Day, a yoga event in Surat, Gujarat set a new world record for the largest gathering of people for a yoga session.

With the staggering participation of more than 1,25,000 people in the state-level Yoga event along with Gujarat Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi was held in the Dumas area of Surat. Over 150 yoga instructors were staged in different blocks and over 20 asanas were practised to mark the International Yoga Day event. This grand collective participation of 1.25 lakh people in yoga sessions created Guinness World Record making it a momentous achievement not just for the state but the whole country.

On the occasion, CM announced the state will open 21 "Yog Studios" to popularise yoga in the state and has trained more than 5000 yoga instructors by the state Yog Board.

As the country is celebrating 75 years of its Independence, the state government organised 75 iconic places in the state to celebrate International Yoga Day. Places like the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad, the Statue Of Unity in Kevadia, and the White Rann of Kutch, are some popular places where yoga day events were held. 

Yoga Day events were held in various places all over the country like Parliament, schools, colleges, healthcare centres, villages, and public places like gardens, police stations, jails etc across the nation to celebrate International Yoga Day.
