A 14-year-old class 9 student from a government residential school in Tumakuru district has given birth to a baby boy, raising concerns and prompting a thorough investigation into allegations of rape. This distressing incident came to light when the young girl, residing in the hostel of the government residential school, returned to her house in Bagepalli taluk of Chikkaballapura district, complaining of stomach pain.

Both the minor's parents and the hostel warden denied being aware of the girl's pregnancy, and the pregnancy only came to light when she was rushed to the hospital. After certain medical check-ups, it was certain that the girl was eight months pregnant.

Class 9th Girl Gives Birth In Karnataka, Hostel Warden Suspended:

On Thursday the 9th grade student gave birth to a baby boy at a hospital in Chikkaballapur district in Karnataka when she came to her home in Begapalli taluk of the district to visit her parents. Despite being underweight, the girl gave birth to a baby boy, and both the child and the minor are in stable condition.

As the hospital authorities informed the police about the concerning case of child pregnancy, the police authorities registered a case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 376 (Rape) and the POCSO Act (Prevention of Children Against Sexual Offences).

The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) counselled the child when she told about a senior boy from school who had impregnated her; however, when the police authorities inquired about the incident, he allegedly denied such allegations.

The police informed me that they have registered the case under relevant sections but have not made any arrests as the girl and her parents are not opening up and are being currently counselled. The police also added that the girl had not been consistent with her statement, as she had also mentioned the name of another boy who is also a senior.

Investigators also revealed that the girl was enrolled in a social welfare hostel a year ago in Class 8 and was frequently irregular with her attendance.

However, the Tumakaru district administration has suspended the hostel warden for negligence in the hosteler's activity and well-being, while both the parents of the child and the warden of the hostel have already denied having any knowledge about the minor's pregnancy.

The lack of awareness surrounding issues of consent, safe relationships, and basic knowledge about their bodies is evident in this case. It serves as a stark reminder of the gaps that exist in providing crucial information to adolescents, empowering them to make informed decisions.

Beyond the individual aspect, the case sheds light on potential weaknesses within systems responsible for safeguarding children. Whether it be schools, residential institutions, or child welfare agencies, this incident prompts a thorough examination of these systems. It calls for a reevaluation of the measures in place to ensure the safety and well-being of students, emphasizing the importance of proactive steps to prevent such distressing incidents in the future.
