PM Modi and Sheikh Hasina hold delegation-level talks

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a two-day visit to Bangladesh in order to hold delegation-level talks, and celebrate the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence. His visit to the country kick-started with a trip to the Shaktira Jeshoreshwari temple which is situated 300 kilometres away from Dhaka.

PM Modi also visited the mausoleum complex of Bangladesh's former president Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He paid his respects to the late leader and planted a sapling at the mausoleum in the presence of Sheikh Hasina. PM Modi also paid tributes at the National Martyr's Memorial in Savar and gave a speech at the Dhaka's Parade Ground, which was a part of the celebrations for Bangladesh's independence.

Besides being part of the celebrations, PM Modi held delegation-level talks with Sheikh Hasina. They have already signed five Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) which span over various areas of bilateral cooperation. These areas include commerce, information technology, sports, etc. They have also held discussions on the progress acheived in important areas such as connectivity, energy, trade, health,  developmental cooperation, etc.

Narendra Modi presented a representational key of 109 live-saving ambulances to Hasina. He also handed over a representational item symbolising India's gift of 1.2 million COVID-19 doses to Bangladesh as a humanitarian gesture.

Earlier, both Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina held a virtual summit on December 17 last year. This was held as a part of PM Modi's 'Neighbourhood First' policy. It was during this summit that Hasina called India Bangladesh's 'true friend.'
