• NCP Calls Priyanka Gandhi Cong’s Star Campaigner

Ahead of the UP polls, Priyanka Gandhi played an active role in Congress’ alliance with Samajwadi Party. NCP leader Majeed Memon praised Priyanka’s efforts and called her the star campaigner of Congress.

“It was expected that Priyanka would be the star campaigner because when the alliance was doubtful and there were some hurdles, I think she plunged into it and was instrumental in bringing about the two parties together. Therefore, she was bound to be there in the list of campaigners. As a matter of fact, I think she would be at the top of the list of star campaigners… we won’t be surprised about it,” Memon told ANI.

As seen in the past, Priyanka has been very close to the people of Amethi and Rae Bareli, her brother and mother’s constituencies, which are also in UP. So even in the alliance, she was significant as senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad sealed the deal with SP.

After the alliance was made, the party workers contended that Priyanka will be central to UP elections now that her efforts have brought the two parties together. But the report submitted by Congress at the beginning of the campaign hasn’t seen any changes to it. It reportedly submitted Priyanka’s name in the list that was given to the Election Commission.

Initially, it was also decided that when Shiela Dixit’s nomination was given for UP’s CM candidate, Priyanka was asked to campaign in the entire state and logistical planning had also started with a team constituted to design Priyanka’s campaigning strategies. But the party leaders thought that the only way to win over the BJP in the state is to form an alliance with the SP. So the Congress is now not keen to over expose Priyanka before the 2019 Lok Sabha battle.

However, she will not be actively involved in campaigning anywhere else for the Congress for now except Rae Bareli and Amethi as has been the case in the past UP elections that she has been a part of.
