A naval all-woman crew, on board INSV Tarini, which is all set to begin a mission to circumnavigate the world in August, reached Mauritius on Tuesday, a defence statement said, Hindustan Times reported. This is INSV Tarini's first sea voyage.
This is the Navy’s second vessel, with an all-woman crew. INSV Mhadei was Indian Navy’s first sailing vessel with women crew, creating maritime history.
“Tarini has begun a new chapter in the history of ocean sailing by Indian women, wherein the first Indian all-woman crew of IN would endeavour to circumnavigate the globe in August 2017,” the statement said. “Tarini aims to promote a spirit of adventure and camaraderie amongst the young Naval personnel in the years ahead,” it added.

The 55-ft tall INSV Tarini is promoting the ‘Make in India’ initiative at the Aquarius Shipyard Pvt Ltd at Divar, Goa.
Besides Lt Commander Vartika Joshi, the sailing team includes a naval architect and the all-woman naval officers' crew comprises Lt Commander Pratibha Jamwal, Lieutenants P Swathi, Vijaya Devi, Payal Gupta and B Aishwarya.
The all-woman team has already tasted the sea in INSV Mhadei when they began the journey from Goa to Visakhapatnam for the International Fleet Review 2016 and thereafter to Mauritius and back. Following that, they took the boat on a gruelling voyage to Cape Town in December 2016.
