• JK Rowling slams WBC for opposing gay marriage

In a landmark decision last week, the Republic of Ireland, a predominantly Catholic country, legalized gay marriage. As shocking and wonderful as this news is, not many are happy with the decision. The author of the Harry Potter series, J.K Rowling, however, isn’t one of them.

Post the announcement, Rowling tweeted: “Sitting here watching the Irish make history. Extraordinary and wonderful.” Later she posted a meme suggesting an imaginary union between Dumbledore and Gandalf (- two characters from Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, respectively) along with a post saying: “Then they could get married IN IRELAND.” While many ‘favourite-d’ and re-tweeted this post. The Kansas based Westboro Baptist Church slammed the author for showing support.

Replying to her tweet, the WBC posted:  ”@jk_rowling wants Dumbledore & Gandalf to marry in Ireland; if it happens WBC will picket! #NotBanned” This did not sit well with the author who further replied: “@WBCsigns Alas, the sheer awesomeness of such a union in such a place would blow your tiny bigoted minds out of your thick sloping skulls.”

While some were ecstatic about Rowling calling them out for their unacceptable behaviour, others believed that she was giving them more attention than they deserve. To this, Rowling said: “I don’t care about WBC. I think it’s important that scared gay kids who aren’t out yet see hate speech challenged.” With her tweets directed at the WBC, Rowling might have put them in the spotlight but the message that she sent out was more powerful than anything else WBC had to say. Way to go JK Rowling!
