Traditionally most women in ‘Masculine’ professions are not given the same respect and opportunities as their male counterparts. But many women today are challenging this notion. Amongst them is an IPS officer, Aparna Kumar, who just last week scaled the highest mountain peak of Indonesia, Carstensz.

Standing at 4,884 mts., Carstenz is a particularly difficult peak to climb, but Kumar who also recently successfully scaled Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, made it through. IG Law and Order, A Satish Ganesh announced today: "Kumar scaled the mountain on November 7 and unfurled the Indian and UP Police flag on the peak. She is the first lady IPS officer of the state to have achieved this feat."

A L Bannerji, the DGP of the state police, congratulated Kumar on her accomplishment and said that her achievement will be inspiring for the state police and women officers and that she has made the department proud.

Officer Kumar was a part of the expedition which started on October 30 and included members from the United States and Canada. Becoming the first female IPS officer to accomplish the task wasn’t an easy journey for Kumar, who trained vigorously and climbed a 1000 meter stretch, carrying 25kgs of weight, on a regular basis to prepare herself for the event.

She says her dream is to touch the world’s seven highest peaks. We hope she succeeds in achieving this and inspires many others to follow their dream without hesitation.
