A man from Ludhiana, Punjab, allegedly stabbed his wife to death in Abbotsford, Canada, on March 15. Jagpreet Singh (50) reportedly video-called his family to inform them that he had "put [Balwinder Kaur] to sleep forever." The incident happened only a week after Singh travelled to Canada to visit Kaur and their daughter, who had been living there since 2022. According to the Indian Express, Singh had been pestering Kaur (41) to arrange his travel to Canada. Kaur's sister Rajwinder told the news outlet that the accused was "obsessed" with the idea of moving to Canada even though he was unemployed and had financial troubles.

According to Singh's brother, Jaspreet, the motive behind the murder was unclear, as they had appeared "happy" and had just returned home from shopping a few hours ago. “ He was asking for forgiveness. Nothing was intentional,” Singh was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

Man Pesters Wife To Arrange Canada Travel, Kills Her Week Later

Jagpreet Singh allegedly killed his wife, Balwinder Kaur, in Abbotsford and then video-called their family back in India to inform them that he had committed the heinous crime. Canada-based CBC News said that Abbotsford police responded to reports of an “assault in progress in a home along Wagner Drive on Friday, March 15, around 10:50 pm”. The report said that the police found Balwinder Kaur inside the home with life-threatening stab wounds, and first responders failed to save her life.

“Balwinder Kaur’s husband Jagpreet Singh was charged with second-degree murder for the fatal stabbing. He was arrested on the scene,” CBC News reported. The family alleges that the killing was "unintentional," as reported by The Indian Express. Reportedly, Singh was adamant about moving to Canada and had just gotten there a week ago.

Jaspreet Singh, the brother of the accused, said, "We are still unclear about what exactly happened that night between my brother and his wife. However, he or our family never harassed Balwinder Kaur. They were a happy couple and had returned from shopping a few hours before the incident. After the incident, my brother called our mother to tell us that he injured his wife by mistake."

Kaur and Singh had been married for 23 years and have two children. Kaur moved to Canada to look after their 22-year-old daughter, who had been facing health issues. She was reportedly the sole earner, as Singh had quit working. After Singh pestered Kaur to let him travel to Canada, he killed her only a week later.
