Joining the Congress as one of only three African-American Republicans is Mia Love- the first black woman to be elected a Republican. She will now join Tim Scott, a black senator from South Carolina, the fifth black  man to be elected to the Congress in a southern state and the first to be elected since the 19th century.

Born to Catholic parents of Haiti origin in New York, Love later converted to Mormonism and moved to Utah. She is now married to a man following the same religion and has two daughters and a son. Love, 38, promised the public to take on “the Godzilla that we call the federal government” and won.

Previously, Love was also on the city council of Saratoga Springs for six years and was later elected its mayor in 2009. She also ran for Congress in 2012 but narrowly lost. Telegraph reports that she often likes to quote her father during speeches, who told her, “Mia, your mother and I never took a handout. You will not be a burden to society. You will give back.”

Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Centre for Politics told the website, “An African-American congresswoman is solid gold for the Republicans. They have enduring, deep problems with both minorities and women across the country, so I guarantee you they will feature Mia Love prominently.”

In the light of all issues faced by the women and the minority in USA, the newly elected Congresswoman said that the issues in the country were not race or gender issues but ‘Country Issues.’ Her husband said, “Mia will tell people that she doesn’t want to buy a cellphone for you. She wants to empower you to buy your own cellphone through your own hard work, through education, and through the support of your family.”
