Padma Lakshmi Feels Relieved About Ex-Husband Salman Rushdie's Recovery

After a deadly attack in New York, Indian born author Salman Rushdie is finally out of danger and heading for a speedy recovery, his agent confirmed.

The former spouse of Salman Rushdie, Padma Lakshmi felt relieved. She said, 'worried and wordless with the news, but she could finally exhale, now hoping for swift healing.'

Padma Lakshmi's tweet comes after a statement released by Rushdie’s son Zafar Rushdie as a recovery update. The statement read," The family was extremely relieved that yesterday the author was taken off the ventilator and additional oxygen, and he was able to say a few words. Though his life-changing injuries are severe, his usual feisty & defiant sense of humour remains intact."

The Indian-American author and TV host Padma Lakshmi was married to Rushdie for three years (2004-07) but was well-acquainted since 1999. It was Lakshmi's first marriage While Rushdie’s fourth marriage. Lakshmi has been quite vocal about her marriage and divorce from him. In her memoir- Love, Loss and What We Ate, she mentioned marriage years with Rushdie, reasons for divorce, and more. Also, she feels one of the reasons for divorce was endometriosis. The acclaimed novelist was in critical condition following the attack on August 12 when he was stabbed during a literary event in the Chautauqua Institution in New York. Andrew Wylie, his agent confirmed that Rushdie suffered serious injuries in the liver and severed nerves in an arm and an eye, and is also likely to lose the injured eye. Assailant identified was a 24-year-old New Jersey resident Hadi Matar. Rushdie continued to face death threats even after decades of writing -The Satanic Verses. Earlier, late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran issued a fatwa (Islamic edict) demanding his death. Several other Iranian foundations also offered a bounty to get the author killed, however, none took responsibility for the attack.

Padma Lakshmi's Personal Life

Lakshmi authored six books, including Easy Exotic and Tangy, Tart, Hot & Sweet- an encyclopedia, The Encyclopedia of Spices & Herbs- An Essential Guide to the Flavors of the World,  A memoir, Love, Loss, and What We Ate,  and Tomatoes for Neela. Lakshmi was married to billionaire Theodore J. Forstmann from 2009 until his death in 2011. She has a daughter businessman Adam Dell. Before that, she was married to Indian born British-American novelist Salman Rushdie from 2004 to 2007.
