Zeenat Aman Sparks Debate on Live-in Relationships; Mumtaz, Saira Banu Weigh In

It all started with a recent Instagram post, Zeenat Aman advocated for couples to live together before marriage, emphasising that it would foster better understanding between partners. She disclosed advising the same to her sons, despite acknowledging the societal stigma attached to 'living in sin.'

Talking about Aman’s statement, in an interview with Hindustan Times, 79-year-old Saira Banu shared her traditional views, stating, "Our trend is 40–50 years ago." She expressed her disapproval of live-in relationships, calling them 'unimaginable and unacceptable.' Banu firmly disagreed with Aman, saying, "I would never advocate live-in relationships like that. It’s something unimaginable and unacceptable for me."

Similarly, Mumtaz, aged 76, criticised her views, cautioning her to be 'careful' about her statements. She suggested that Aman's newfound social media popularity might be clouding her judgement. During an interview with Zoom, she cautioned Zeenat about being mindful of her online statements, suggesting that she might be trying to appear "cool".

She said, "She has all of a sudden come into this huge social media popularity, and I can understand her excitement about sounding like a cool aunty. But giving advice that is counter to our moral values is not the solution to increasing your following. Aap Zeenat ko hi le lo misaal ke taur par (Take Zeenat for example). She knew Mazhar Khan for years before marrying him. Her marriage was a living hell. She should be the last person doling out advice on relationships. "

Meanwhile, Zeenat, 72, responded to Mumtaz's remarks, asserting that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. She emphasised that she has always refrained from commenting on others' personal lives or disparaging her colleagues, stating, "I’ve never been one to comment on others personal lives or tear down my colleagues, and I’m not going to start now."

According to Indian ExpressZeenat Aman, whose marriage has been in the spotlight, had been married twice, with her first marriage with Sanjay Khan in 1978 being annulled and the second one with actor Mazhar Khan in 1985 marked by unhappiness.

Discussing her own experiences, she expressed her discontent within the marriage during an appearance on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal in 1999. She said, "Mazhar never wanted me to grow as an individual or as an artist. He always wanted me to be with the kids and be at home." She added how in the initial year of her marriage, she acknowledged realising it was a huge mistake yet chose to persist and attempt to salvage it. Despite her efforts spanning over a twelve-year period, she found no resolution or happiness, experiencing continuous struggle and discontent throughout.
