Caitlyn Jenner has taken to social media to deride US President Donald Trump over his decision to rescind protection for transgender students in schools around the US. The order had been put in place by the Obama administration and allowed transgender students to use the bathroom of their choice.
Jenner posted a video on Twitter saying, “I have a message for President Trump from, well one Republican to another. This is a disaster. And you can still fix it. You made a promise to protect the LGBTQ community.”
Jenner is known as one of the important faces for transgender people. And she was also a Republican who had been an early supporter of Trump’s.
A year ago, Trump had said that “people should use the bathroom they feel appropriate”.
Trump’s move has been criticised by gay rights supporters around the world. Singer Jackie Evancho, who performed at the President’s inauguration ceremony, has a transgender sister and has said that she is disappointed by the decision.
Reactions on Twitter varied from condemning Jenner for supporting Trump in the first place, to lauding her for now standing up to him.
Caitlyn Jenner came out on the 2015 cover of Vanity Fair, and has since been one of the most well known faces of the transgender community. She also produced a documentary series called “I Am Cait” which spoke about her own life and also those of other members of the transgender community.
