Madhuri Dixit started her career as a leading actress in ‘Abodh’ (1984), followed by a series of films that failed to give Madhuri her due recognition. Then four years later in 1988, the actress was cast opposite Anil Kapoor in ‘Tezaab’ which upon release instantly established her as a rising superstar and a dancing diva.  The film also went on get her a Filmfare Award nomination. There was no looking back for the actress after this point.

1994 Proved to be a turning point in Madhuri Dixit’s career. Her film, ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun,’ went on to become one of the biggest hits in the history of Indian cinema. Already an established actress at that point, Madhuri was paid an approximate amount of 2.7 crores for her work in the film, making her one of the highest paid actresses in 1990's. The film, which saw unparalleled success in India, also went on to earn 1 million pounds in the U.K, creating a record which has not been broken by any movie till date.

In the 90’s she went on to do many more critically and commercially successful films and is the only actress to have been nominated 13 times at Filmfare Awards. She has won 5 Filmfare Awards, 4 Star Screen Awards and 2 Zee Cine Awards for her performances. Among many other accolades and honours, she has also been named as one of the ‘Top Five Most Powerful Indian Movie Stars’ by Forbes and was honoured by the Indian government with a Padma Shree award.

In 1999, Madhuri married a cardiovascular surgeon based in Denver, USA, but was still seen on Television often. She hosted a matchmaking show titled, ‘Kahin Na Kahin koi hai,’ was a guest on ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, a game show hosted by Mr.Amitabh Bachchan, and was seen on Karan Johar’s talk show, ‘Koffee with Karan,’ among others. Almost a decade later, Madhuri shifted back to India and made a comeback into films with YRF’s ‘Aaja Nachle.’ It has been reported that painter M.F. Hussain, who is a big admirer of the actress, booked the whole cinema hall to watch her film.

Post ‘Aaja Nachle,’ Madhuri has been a judge at a dance show, ‘Jhalak Dikhlaja,’ which proved hugely successful for the show’s ratings and has won acclaim for her work in movies like ‘Gulab Gang’ and ‘Dedh Ishkiya.’ Last year, she was also appointed as the "Goodwill Ambassador Advocate" for child and equal woman's rights. Madhuri also turned an entrepreneur recently. Along with her husband, she opened an online dance academy, ‘Dance With Madhuri.’
