Shame on Bangalore city. Women were groped and molested on the 31st December night. When the whole world was busy with celebrating the new year, reportedly Bangalore’s youth were caught in ugly pictures – reportedly women were molested enmasse, became target of lewd comments on streets of Bangalore’s most popular and populated areas like MG Road and Brigade Road.
What the Bangalore Mirror termed hooliganism, men mobbed the New Year revellers, groped the women present on the busy central streets of the city all while 1,500 policemen were apparently patrolling in those areas.
Though the arrangements made by the police were tight, and the deadline for celebrations had been pushed till 2 am this year.
According to an eyewitness, two women were accosted by a group of youth on MG Road. Even many of them during crowd control exercise, came to the police asking for help — weeping, shivering and reporting molestation. Several women had run towards women police officers while crying out loud.
“I personally went and asked one of the cops deployed on the streets to go to the aid of two women being accosted by a group of youth on MG Road. He went and chased them but they were back to the spot in a couple of minutes. There was nothing much that they could do as the group was back and the women were also in the same crowd,” said a working professional.
As the night turned out to be horrifying, male friends or relatives of the women couldn’t be helpful enough – as the mobs were in big numbers while they came charging.
Former city police commissioner NS Megharikh (in charge of New Year’s Eve security in the city) had earlier made the announcement that they would be deployed in rally to make sure all the precautions taken down to ensure an ‘incident-free’ New Year but rather the opposite happened.
