Fourth-seeded Sania and Barbora defeated the Australian-Chinese pair of Samantha Stosur and Shuai Zhang 6-1 6-4 in a match that lasted for one hour 21 minutes in a second round duel in Melbourne on Friday.
The Indo-Czech pair was in the lead from the very first set by breaking them thrice out of the five attempts and eased into a race to a 4-0 lead in the first set. Though Samantha and Shuai played a good game, Mirza and Strycova outplayed them.
The Indo-Czech pair finished runners-up at last week’s Apia International in Sydney.
The pair Mirza-Strycova is playing their first Australian Open together after the Indian split with her long-time partner Martina Hingis late last year.
Mirza-Strycova will next face off with the winner of the match between the French-Polish team of Alize Cornet-Magda Linette and the Japanese pairing of Eri Hozumi-Miyu Kato.
Meanwhile, Rohan Bopanna crashed out of the men’s doubles after his second round match at Melbourne Park on Friday.
